2D Starting From Scratch

You guys know that i can't draw 2D so i'll start a WIP section in which i'll post everyday at least one study/drawing on something in the near future.
Don't be so harsh @ the start :D

Hi coldwave
I didnt like the first page but the others were better, you need to work on proportions, the last one (girl) would have been realy good but the hands and boots are to small.........dave

Haha, I just read the chat bubbles between those two guys at the top of the first image. I think you're all over the place though, I see perspective, anatomy, body dynamics, realism and toon. You may be overloading yourself.

If you want to start 2D from "scratch", then you may want to find a spherical object, plop it down under a lamp, find a comfy seat and start drawing what you see. Then try a box and cone (a real world example is best but if that's too much then pop open Maya) and if you can find a cylindrical shape (I dunno like one of those big candles) that would be good too.

I didn't really understand it when my dad tried to tell me when I was a kid, but pretty much everything around us is based on these shapes, just like when you want to model something in 3D, you break it down and choose a primitive that will be the base. Keep at it, the only thing that can really get in your way is laziness (and I speak from experience!) :p

Hi Coldwave,

I think they are cool!!! I used to draw myself (prehistoric times) and I was more of a copy artist, i.e get an image scale up or down and reproduce. My old mate gave me a book once called 'drawing on the right side of the brain', I cant remember the author? It was a bloody good read and you might find it interesting if you havent already had a look. give it a look though, it is suprising what the mind is capable of!!

Cheers Bullet

stwert 16-02-2010 05:17 PM

Betty Edwards is the author

bullet1968 16-02-2010 09:17 PM

Thanks stwert you are correct, might be time to invest in another copy.

ColdWave 16-02-2010 09:47 PM

Thx guys for the feedback. I'll start ASAP to draw from life some forms like you said GecT. Just a skull drawing.
And a face from side.

Trying some proportions. But they run away..

Keep trying mate, honestly try getting a copy of this book. In fact one of the exercises is drawing stuff UPSIDE down, sounds crazy but it works!! Get a mannequin/doll turn it upside down and draw it, you will be suprised!!

THX1138 17-02-2010 01:50 AM

Thats pretty awesome stuff Coldwave. I agree with some of the other statements above. learn to work with primitives like GecT recommends, it will help you get a grasp with the foundation of your drawing. I also recommend checking out or purchasing a book on human anatomy for drawing people.

Great work so far!!

ColdWave 17-02-2010 09:44 AM

I'll start with primitive right now ! And i have some anatomy book it's in Bulgarian it's awesome !!

I'll start drawing later today few updates coming :)

Betty Edwards i watched 30 min of an 2 hours 2D course really interesting ... I'll post up some work tomorrow today was a 3D day.. :D

Rhetoric Camel 18-02-2010 12:55 AM

doin better than I probably would if I got back into drawing. Keep it up, you'll get better the more you practice.
It's been a good 10 years since I've done any sketches or drawings, a while ago I picked up a sketch book and some drawing pencils and came across this site: http://www.learn-to-draw.com/ haven't done anything since I got the book and found the site but I bookmarked it for future reference. Maybe it will help. It's definitely geared towards beginners but hopefully it will be useful to you and anyone else that might want to get into drawing.

I thought of this because bullet1968 mentioned drawing upside down and that it works, and this site uses that method atleast on one exercise.
