S2-speedy - Horror Challenge - Zombie Dog

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys and Girls.

Havent been in here for a while. Glad to see another challenge is underway. I was looking back a few months ago and nothing ever happened so surprised to see this thread :)

Anyway, Love the new idea and I was having a think about the horror genre and scary characters and one thing that always made me sh*t my pants, were those Dogs in resident evil 2.

The people were bad too but really slow and didnt scare u as much as you could just pop them in the head but the dogs were much faster and harder to get away from. I plan to re-create the image below hopefully in a dark alley (if I have time for a scene) but from the perspective of the dog lookin at you, as if to say - im coming for you! :)

never done a realistic animal before so going to try it. I should probably also note, I havent touched a 3d program in about 8 months so glad get using it again.

good luck everyone.

elephantinc 23-08-2010 06:26 PM

This is the kind of horror monster I like to see! ;)
Those dogs in resident evil terrify me (even more so because I've been attacked by one before in real life).

daverave 23-08-2010 06:48 PM

elephantinc youve been attacked my a resident evil dog are you sure........LOL....dave

elephantinc 23-08-2010 07:20 PM

lol, well it wasn't a zombie but it was a doberman type thing.
Glad to see someone doing something a bit less conventional.

Onya Speedy!!! bahahah yep...I absolutely s**t myself in that part of the game!!! I dont know what it was about the dogs?? Even (game 2 I think) when they chased you around a fountain or something in the garden. Had the same effect..though when they came through that window....ppwwwwffffttt..uh oh...my very young daughter at the time jumped and looked at me and said "Daddy are you ok...you spilt your beer"...bahahaha

good luck mate

s2-speedy 24-08-2010 08:03 AM

OK its not much but here is a start I made on the head. Just blocking the basic shape out at the minute.

daverave 26-08-2010 10:12 AM

You have to start some were, looking good..........dave

bullet1968 26-08-2010 10:50 AM

Good start mate.....I know you will make a good show of it..

cheers bullet

s2-speedy 26-08-2010 10:56 AM

Thanks guys.

I'll try bullet, texturing is usually my weak point but we'll see how it goes hey. :)

More progress coming later.

bullet1968 26-08-2010 11:00 AM

Mate I cant do any of it in my own eyes...but hey I give it a crack even if I know and complain I cant do it...gives dave something to do in his spare time too....

You will do fine.....I found when I texture in PS (havent done it in Maya yet) I have the UV map...get my colours from real images with the dropper...and spray/paint my own little colour pallete in the corner. That way you dont have to keep trying to get the colours matched...just a tip

cheers bullet

daverave 31-08-2010 01:12 PM

Looks like you have a good base mesh s2-speedy are you taking it into zbrush or are you doing it in maya...............dave

s2-speedy 31-08-2010 02:27 PM

Thanks Dave,

I would love to take it into Z-brush if I had it. Some of the detail and you can do in there looks amazin. Not sure my PC would handle it though to be fair as its getting on a bit now. Might get a new one in the New year. In the meantime, i might keep this pup low to medium poly, but without a poly limit.

Now I have to remember how to UV lol its been a while...

Dango77 31-08-2010 04:06 PM

Looking very good for low poly Speedy, he's looking all in proportion and has a nice shape to him so far, I like it!
It's a shame you don't have Zbrush to do some extra detailing, but I'm sure you'll do a good job anyhow.

bullet1968 31-08-2010 09:00 PM

Hey Speedy...you can download Zbrush trial if you havent already..I did get 30 days to try it man.

cheers bullet

s2-speedy 01-09-2010 08:31 AM

Thanks for the comments Guys.

Bullet: I hadnt thought of downloading the trial :) thanks for that. but can anyone confirm, Do you render in z-brush and if so, does the trial leave watermarks over the image?

I might have a play with it a bit later on but not sure if i will use it yet for this competition as I do have a pretty useless Pc at the moment so not sure it will handle it. lol.

We'll see...

Hi guys, Here is an update.

Modelling is almost finished on the dog but I wanted to have a quick render test of the UV mapping I did. Its only a quick rush job for now, as I wanted to see if I could remember how to UV, as its been a while and havent UV mapped for ages and it was never my strongest point.

I know he isnt looking very zombiefied yet, I just wanted to get the dog side look to him first, then totally F**k him up with the T-virus later :) That should be Fun.

OK I guess I should updated you all. :)

I hadnt had much to show recently, as I was workin on the texture for the dog as a zombie. It was alot harder and time consuming and I wasnt happy with what I had done so after a few weeks, here is my side texture for my zombie dog. I build it up in layers, bones, flesh and fur.

and here is that texture on the model.

made a start on the dead arm that the dog will hold in his mouth...more to come later.

marlonjohn 22-09-2010 11:59 AM

I like how you did the texture on the model, nice!

honestdom 22-09-2010 01:23 PM

i'm no rigging expert, but do dogs have 8 joints in their front legs?

s2-speedy 23-09-2010 11:17 AM

Thanks MarlonJohn :)

Hammer.Horror - ur right they dont have 8 joints. Not every joint will bend only the parts that are meant to like the knee and ankle. Dont ask my why i made more bones than was neccesarry but I remembered a guy doin a tutorial once and he made extra bones even those that didnt bend so I just followed him. His was on a human and he did 2 bones for the top of the arm, then two bones for the forearm.

I've made a start to the cops head and hat. the hat needs some sorting. this was done of the top of my head but I just got some reference and see that it needs re-shaping but thought id show it anyway.

Dango77 29-09-2010 12:14 PM

Nice work so far speedy, love the dog especially!
