April Challenge - Spoiler - noobie

Hi,

Not tried one of these challenges yet so I'm gonna give this a go. I was hoping for something less organic but nevermind. It's all good practice.

I shall mostly be getting inspiration from this

Kevin 01-04-2003 03:24 PM

nice idea mate - I may steal them refs myself :)

M 01-04-2003 04:04 PM

Hey spoiler, very nice.. make the eyes a bit more narrow though when you model it, to give it that evil look. Looks great! Are you going for a statue look, or the actual gargoyle?

Spoiler 01-04-2003 04:12 PM

Not sure yet. I've been doing some sketches of it standing up. I'm hoping I could animate it at some point.

But this is all probably wishful thinking ;)

Change of plan and all that.. I can be very fickle.

Anyway, here is a evil pet sketch. I'm gonna clean it up in illustrator and make all the proportions even.

Damn, you can tell I'm new. I'm far too excited about this. Hardly anyone has signed up yet and I'm off and "my" full speed (which isnt very fast I can you).

anyway, I kinda got the body of my "evil dog".

doodle 02-04-2003 01:05 AM

bwahahaha...

My first attempt at ears.. They look ridiculous! hehehe...

Anyone know some good dogearred techniques?

Spoiler 02-04-2003 01:26 AM

no wonder. real ears face the other way.

Garry1953 02-04-2003 01:33 AM

Spoiler

The ears can face anyway you want. :)

It adds creativity, when making a non REAL creature.
and besides, they look good as they are.:D

Spoiler 02-04-2003 01:36 AM

ahh... nm.

I just undid them :)
They were only a quick experiment anyhow. I'll try and get some gnarly ones going on.

I thought I'd leave the ears until I have had more practice. So no I bring you claws. Albeit a little wonkey

Spoiler 02-04-2003 02:13 AM

well, after 5 hours of pure adrenaline I have got this far. I really didn't notice to time go by.

Spoiler

You show real talent.
Looks nice.:)

M 02-04-2003 07:31 AM

Im quite interested in how you do not just model off of one refrence, but do a lot of research and find out how it is supposed to be modelled, from views of dogs and probably bat wings of some kind in the future. Keep it up, looking great!.

Spoiler 02-04-2003 12:49 PM

M, I'm kinda making it up as I go along. I have no idea of the right and wrong ways of doing this stuff. I'm just doing it.

Cyrius 02-04-2003 01:25 PM

how did you model your "dogs" with NURBS ?? (i m very bad with nurbs and don t know anythink of them)

Spoiler 02-04-2003 01:32 PM

Cyrius, I modelled it with Subds. It's almost exactly the same as the dog tutorial on this site, just a different shape.

However, I have run into a slight problem. The head wasnt looking right so I have deleted all the face that were wrong. How can i make a new face to extrude from again?

cb8rwh 02-04-2003 02:04 PM

you could extrude the edges instead of creating anew face, alternatively (i am not sure about this) using the append poly tool to create a poly along the three edges, then extrude the face it creates.

Spoiler 02-04-2003 06:33 PM

I sorted that out by cheating. I just moved the front of it's nose back toward the rest of it's face then split that face, extruded it and turned it into "Duck Dog!"

strarup 02-04-2003 07:41 PM

Hi Spoiler,

LoL... :D

the "Duck Dog" sounds great... :)

like...
- "who's coming?"
+ "DD..."
- "oh DareDevil... I'm not scared by him..."
+ "no it is the DuckDog!!!"
- "WHAT?¿? run for your life!!!"

sorry couldn't help it... but I still think it sounds good... :)

regards

"Duck Dog" was a terrible mistake. Anyway, I have been working on this again tonight. And have done a fair bit which i am happy with.

Firstly, I have added some ribs. To make it look skinny and underfed.

Here's the wire.

I did all that a few hours ago but had lost net connection for sometime. So, I was unable to post them.

Here is where I am at now. I got lucky with the ears this time. I just grab a vertex and pulled it some way and better ear shape appeared. I worked it a little and now I think I have a good rough shape going.

Spoiler 02-04-2003 11:37 PM

oh and I also reshaped the body, neck and head a little to make it less boxy.

I'm sure you don't really want to know every tiny detail about this, but I honestly have nothing better to do. So here we go.

I've been working on the ears some more. They will do for now. This is all going far better than I expected.

Witchy 03-04-2003 12:52 AM

I think it is looking great!

schmick 03-04-2003 04:05 AM

Great progress so far.

M 03-04-2003 07:24 AM

Wow, really looking nice! Just make sure you get that evil rabies look to it.. and add spikes.. lots of spikes :D. Heh, thats actually up to you.. it will be interesting to see where this goes.

strarup 03-04-2003 10:02 AM

Hi Spoiler,

I don't know how much the "Duck Dog" was a terrible mistake... I liked the name of it... :)

the new model is also great especially the "ribs"... :)

regards

Strarup

Spoiler 03-04-2003 11:54 AM

I definitely gonna try for the evil rabies look. I'm having trouble with the head though. It's looking more and more like a bull terrier. So, I guess it is look like a scary dog from hell then.

Started on the mouth today. It's proving to be a little tricky. I have a basic shape happening now, but I have no idea how to get all the fangs and stuff I can see in my minds eye on the model.
