McLaren LM 1995

I'm going to give car modeling a whirl, and being my first, I decided to go with something that I always thought was cool, but not overwhelming in shapes and details. Maybe if I win that lottery someday, I'll actually get to own one:) So the McLaren LM is the subject and we'll see how it goes (this is also my first experiment in modeling an industrial object though box modeling). Its being made in maya 4.5.

Here's a ref pic of the real beauty :

So far I've gotten the basic overall shape roughed out and I think at this point I'll start cutting in the more specific aspects of each panel. here's a pic of the completed rough wire:

I'm using suurlands blueprints, but its missing the rear view and the views don't match up too well unfortunately. If anyone knows of great reference sites for this car, please let me know. I would be greatly indebted! And of course, comments or critiques are most welcome.

Here's a bit of an update to the McLaren model. Box modeling is a wierd beast and is really a puzzle on how to maintain quads and still get the shape you want. Anyways, I've been cutting in the detail on the front end and I'm just starting on the headlights. Still a few bumps to smooth out, but coming along (slowly).

Constant fiddling with what edges to use is driving me nuts. After this is done, then on to the midsection

very nice!

Scraggy_Dogg 16-09-2003 09:33 PM

WooHoo

luvverly :D

BTW I'm a noob here, and I was wondering? are they NURBS? or Poly Faces? They really look like Poly faces... If so did you control the amount by using a Smooth Proxy??? or how? Sorry if i'm being too nosey but want to try a viewplane model next...

Regards Scraggy

JasonA 17-09-2003 12:01 AM

Thanks :)

This model is smoothed poly faces. I'm not using smooth proxy cause I find it to be a pain in the a$$. So I just model away and occasionally smooth to check it out, then undo. But in hindsight I realize that this particular car might have lent itself well to NURBS instead of poly modeling. oh well, I started it now so I'll run with it.

ok here's an update. I've focused on just getting the lights and doors detailed and grooves cut in. Next I'll start figuring out the roof intake.

adldesigner 18-09-2003 08:19 PM

Very good modelling indeed.

Zyk0tiK 18-09-2003 08:38 PM

Damn good!

aldudeau 18-09-2003 11:13 PM

awesome

JasonA 23-09-2003 10:22 PM

I've finished off the roof intake(s) and the back windshields (more or less). I'll have to put some intake ports on the bottoms of the glass. Ignore the small squigglies cause the two halfs aren't attached yet. Now its time to start figuring out the back end and seal the deal for the overall outer body.

Comments and suggestions would be very welcome :)

kbrown 24-09-2003 07:13 AM

Looking sweet. Keep it up!

adldesigner 24-09-2003 07:20 AM

Very very good progress!

otaku 24-09-2003 08:22 AM

nice poly-construction!

nice is this construction of car

i can't find mutch of critics its near by perfect, but there where the front wheels are inside the original picture, it has one part seperated for wheel this part goes straight down to the doors of the car...
on your model not same as original.

maybe you will cut that later?

nice car man cant wait to see the progress

:D

luistlf 24-09-2003 05:17 PM

I think this model wiil end up being one of the best car models here in simplymaya, as i can see the body details are very nice.
Waiting for more updates.

otaku 24-09-2003 05:20 PM

thats right!

it will be a example of car-design.

should it give an exactly copy of the original model?

or do you modify on your own taste?

CU :)

luistlf 24-09-2003 05:20 PM

Jason could you please post a more recent lowploy wire so we can see how you manage to get such a nice body detail, it doesn´t need to bee all the model, just one part would be great( a door, headlight)
Thanks.

JasonA 24-09-2003 06:17 PM

Thanks for your very generous comments guys :)

otaku, I think I see the part you're referring to. could you post a pic of what you mean? If its the mud guard around the front wheel area, yes it still needs to be cut in. I kinda forgot about it :D. thanks. I am trying to make it as accurate as possible, but I have different McLaren pics that all have *slightly* different details (in one or two items) so I guess even mine will be a bit of a custom one, But only minutely so.

luistlf, thanks so much. Well I've seen some pretty sweet vehicles in here so I'm not sure if mine will be that good but I appreciate the sentiment. It'll be a nice Mclaren I hope :) I already made a wire pic for a different forum, its a bit far away but you can see how the edges are cut in.

I think this is what otaku was reffering too

otaku 24-09-2003 07:00 PM

like this...

ah you understud what i mean.

i try to explaning you the detail of correction.

its a short session for your model, you just need the split polygon tool.

on the picture i tryed to mark...

on the yellow original is this split line from wheel to nose ending on bottom of carosserie.

but on your modell the horizontal line who crosses trough the wheel area.

there you first delete the edge and remove the lonely vertex #2

this line we wanna ad (edge) is not starting on the end o edges that doesn t matter you can cut with split polygon tool to lines down to the bottom starting (as result of cut) as a triangle (the small black circle) and goes down to bottom.

i hope you will catch it.

you seems not to be a noob, i think yo are already skillful!

if not i will cut for you the model and view public all steps...

cu

AAAAHHHHH VECTOR MAN WAS FASTER

ah cool vectorman but you was faster hihi so now he has double explaination...

:p :bgreen:

JasonA 24-09-2003 09:06 PM

Ah yes you are right. I forgot about that piece over the wheel well. I'll get to that today:)

I'm not sure I understand your comments about the front seam of the door. The door is a seperate pice from the body at this point, but its missing a separation point if its to open (I haven't decided if I want to do much in the interior).

JasonA 25-09-2003 02:08 AM

I reviewed some of my reference pics and have discovered that the mud guard actually goes all the way around the wheel well, so its a bit different from what Vectorman posted. Anyways, I cut in the edges for it (I think it needs a bit of tweaking stil, but you get the idea) and I'll probably fix it up a bit later. Right now I'm working on the back end details. so here's an updated pic of the front quarter

aldudeau 25-09-2003 06:27 AM

That is amazing work man!!!

Truly great!

luistlf 25-09-2003 07:49 PM

jason it`s beeing difficult to maintain the model allquad?
I`m modeling a audiallroad myself and some parts are like hell :)

Vectorman 25-09-2003 07:56 PM

Sorry to screw you up, you're original gif image did not have enough detail to tell that, but me and otaku could tell SOMETHING was up there. When i zoomed in, it appeared just very slightly to me that it looked the way i showed, so i took the liberty with a paintbrush to bring out that extra line at the top and then up the contrast of the whole pic. But alas you have gone beyond that.

BTW You're car is looking very nice, i've found that the people who are doing REALLY good often get alot of crits, so pay attention to you're crits(as you have been) and you could take this VERY FAR. Can't wait for some textures.

JasonA 25-09-2003 08:28 PM

luistlf, I tried my best but in reality its not all quads. Just do the best you can, and if you end up with a non-quad, oh well.

Vectorman, you didn't screw me up at all, you helped clarify the feedback. And I appreciate it too. Your guesstimate was totally reasonable, I just had to go and really study the area to be sure I was doing it right. Hey I'd rather you guys bring it up than to not say anything :)

Thanks folks, update tonight

Vectorman 25-09-2003 08:30 PM

YAY! Keep up the good work then

JasonA 26-09-2003 02:36 AM

updated

Another update to the Maclaren. I've settled on the overall shape of the tail end, and have cut in the panels and intake ports, as well as the brake and turn light cutouts. It will need detail work in here, but mostly stuff that isn't 'attached' to the mainbody (with the exception of one part i now see I forgot). Please forgive the obvious seam because the two halves are not combined together yet.

Very good Jason, can`t wait to see more.

JasonA 30-09-2003 09:25 PM

behold, It has wheels :D Loosley based on a set of treads I saw at Les Schwab last week. The rim of course is the McLaren LM rim.

luistlf 30-09-2003 10:11 PM

like it Jason they seem very accurate, is that rubber just one poly object or the inside is made of a nurbs revolve?
Good work, looking forward to see the car:thumbsup:

kbrown 30-09-2003 10:37 PM

Can't wait to see it textured. Keep it up!

JasonA 01-10-2003 07:36 PM

I'll be adding textures to it soon:) thanks guys! the inner tube is a nurbs revolve under the tread. I might have to make a poly wall out of it tho, cause I'm concerned that the tire won't deform properly as two seperate pieces.

luistlf 03-10-2003 09:32 AM

me too can`t wait to see first illuminations tests

regards

JasonA 08-10-2003 05:53 PM

Right now I'm getting the brake lights, grills, and mufflers done to wrap up the back end modeling. Here's an updated pic with the front end modeling essentially done. (I have to dothe windshield wipers yet).
