Jeez, that IS odd. If you don't need that background plane for anything (reflections or shadows), why not change your render global settings so that the default BG color is white? Keep your bottom...

If you want more of a "video look", consider rendering your animation with FIELDS, not FRAMES. In case you don't know what this does, it will mainly smooth out quick motion as it divides the screen...
