yeah i'd go with the Split method myself... actually you can use other methods as well... just depends on what works easiest for you. hoping im not too late on this post ? lol

actually it will say something to the aspect of " learning maya " then i guess you'll have to choose the actual version in refrence, etc. Do you have the Unlimited Maya 3D 5 version ?
