I know that - but at one time I had no object selected, and when I rotated, instead of rotating around the origin I was rotating around the corner of the grid :(

I know how to set the pivot point on an object... But when I rotate in the perspective view, how do I set the point I rotate around??

If your scene needs more ram than you have, it will greatly slow it down. If you have more ram than the scene needs to render, it won't help a bit.
