Btw, I noticed that I've done sort of same mistakes you (Mike) did with my model. I'm pretty sure why it happened. Photographs are always perspective shots and thus cannot be followed strictly in an orthographic viewport (especially the front reference image; the side profile has less distortion). That's why the front shot above looks a bit odd. It looks like it's been shot with a fisheye lense user added image

A friend of mine gave me a valuable tip. After the initial render, open the image in photoshop and position/scale the face parts in there -> instant feedback and a reference for future modifications. Here's an example of the above shot after some photoshopping:
