Photographs are always perspective shots and thus cannot be followed strictly in an orthographic viewport (especially the front reference image; the side profile has less distortion). That's why the front shot above looks a bit odd. It looks like it's been shot with a fisheye lense A friend of mine gave me a valuable tip. After the initial render, open the image in photoshop and position/scale the face parts in there -> instant feedback and a reference for future modifications.
