Thanks for the tips. I've already gone through all that plus more and finally found the cause of the problems: the nforce chipset drivers. There was a newer one at nvidia's site than at the mobo manufacturer's (msi) site and that seemed to fix the instability problem. The only problem that remains now is the random few second freezes I get with 3dmark05. Testing various forceware versions now...
