It's looks really good for a first attempt, but I have to say that it's looking a bit doughy/soft. I'm not really sure that I can offer any advice on how to make it look more solid other than perhaps going back to your low poly model and trying out sub-d's again. I know that they are not everyone's cup of tea but they work for me (with certain things!!).
