I'd say just dive in and experiment with ZB, it'd be good to see what you found out about it in your WIP and any nice tricks/problems that you find.
Maybe that could be a ZB style challenge for here - start with a generic head blob and take it to a state of completeness using whatever program you use....
sounds like a good idea with the texturing, if you have any tutorial links to stuff like that then let me know as I'm still in the basics when it comes to shaders etc
