I might be misunderstanding you, but why don't you select the front face of the windscreen to extrude, that's the usual method

its not the side faces extruding, its the edges that are extruding. selecting the edges and extruding them forward will not extrude the face of the windscreen, you need to select the front faces (sorry to repeat myself )
