Ches my advice would be to download as many video tutorials as possible and work from them.

The eye tutorial might be a good one to start with. I began with a car tutorial which I used to create the bikes you will see in the very beginning of this thread.
You will also find the forums to be extremely use full when you get stuck, many have come to my rescue when I have encountered a problem and been extremely help full.
There are a lot of text and imaged based tutorials around but I would advise going with video tutorials since they are much easier to follow when you are starting out. Once you are comfortable with the interface though and have a good idea what you are doing you will probably find text based tutorials a lot easier to understand. Or at least that was how it was for me.
