Cheers mayaniac, I've read about issues with the smooth mesh preview, but after using it day after day for since the launch of 2008 I've yet to see it distort a base mesh - could it be that it's been fixed by a service pack or something? I thought it just created a viewport preview of your poly mesh without altering the original at all (if you render for example you'll see that the base mesh is still there)? Something I should perhaps look into more, thanks man gubar
