Not sure if this is what you mean but...

Polygon menu set,
normals menu,
soften edge,

as far as I know this is how you make the geometry selected smoother without smoothing (ie; adding polys)

If I'm wrong someone will most likely correct me hopefully but that should help, hopefully....!
