Beginner level.

I'm playing around with Maya 2012 for the first time.

I downloaded two files from this location.

The Maya Binary crashed the program crashed the program no matter what options I selected.

The Alias Wavefront .OBJ loaded not a lot of fun because because it is one object; everything is the same color when you put a texture on it.

I've seen this binary work in Maya 7.0 at a friends house.

Is there limit to how far back a previous version will work? Or is there some conversion tool to make the binary "newer" or some setting that I can change?
