I have had the opportunity to see several movie production models so it did not surprise me that there was no serious poly limit. I have a Star Trek movie model with almost 15 million polys in it. I knew about the proxy models used for animatics but was curious about short and long shot models so the bit about baking out normal maps for the long shots was good to learn.
