Could you be more specific? What kind of character would you like to model (human, animal, etc). Will this be used for animation?
James Taylor (Method JTV on Youtube) is pretty good for character modeling. Mostly he does humans. I would recommend Youtube for most of the free content. There's a lot of animal character modeling tuts there as well.
You could also get a free trial to places like Pluralsight and the Gnomon Workshop.
