You can set the filetype to avi. And set the frame extension to something so you get the time range boxes activated. You could also render the whole thing as a sequence of images and do the video compression in post using for example Virtual dub (free, easy, does avi), this is preferrable because sometimes you have to reencode using different quality settings and formats and you don't want to rerender.
