There shouldn't be.The maya software render is a very optimized raytracer that can't do almost any distribution raytracing(apart from soft shadows). GI and FG are just that.

The only difference would be that the software renderer's artifacts would be noise, and MR's artifacts would be blotches (caused from low-accuracy photon mapping and the use of irradience caching and filtering to try to remove that)

Just want to clarify anyone's ideas about "Software renderer as good as mental ray???! No way!"
