Looking nice so far. Are you thinking of using SSS?

I find that it can lower the overall depth of a bump and also change the sense of scale of an object.

Some of the bunps seem to be a bit uniform in depth along the trunk, but that may be due to the size of the picture distortign the look.

Not too sure where its going at the moment but I'm sure that it will come together.
