That looks great! I am going to try this tutorial soon. If you double click on the move icon, a panel opens to where you can change from world axis, to object axis, to normal axis, etc... - very powerful. I think this is waht you were looking for, and will kick yourself for it's ease of use in the scenarios you were describing
