allowTopologyModification off??

Hi,

made a table out of a cube with extruded legs to which I applied a subdiv proxy. I tried to create a UV map for it using "automatic projection" and when I tried to move and sew the uvs together I get this message: "Error: Cannot change topology, poly mesh has allowTopologyModification attribute set to false". I also noticed that my Channel boxes are all a sort of beige colour and I can't edit them manually. Anyone has an idea of what the problem is?
