You could create a cylinder for the middle pole, then from there use a helix as a guideline and add edges in a spiral around, then extrude the edges outwards, then upwards and refine it from there... Would probably be easier to just use a helix and cut off the top half though :p But with the cylinder you would get the smooth transition form pole to slide
