Unity is similar to DX Studio, the key difference being Unity is for Macs. Also, akaik Unity does not have it's own built in model editor.

We've had a lot of people come across to us from Virtools. I haven't used it but the key complaints I've heard (other than price) were about limited functionality and a slow/unresponsive dev team.

Might be worth posting the question on our forum for more views as I'm sure a few of our users will have had the same questions.

FYI we do offer heavily discounted educational licenses that are directly equivalent to our full commercial licenses (no royalties etc) which could fit with your needs.
