I'd have to disagree about the functionality of Virtools as it is fairly easy to get into the case style scripting (especially for some non programmers) and when that limits you then you can start using VSL (C like built in language construct) to create reusable behaviours.
On the issue of support however I think you are definitely right. I've seen lots of things ignored and usually you have to hope someone else has done or knows how to deal with the things you're often stuck on. You end up digging real deep in the forums in the vain hope of understanding your problem in a roundabout way.
