Cutting shapes from Polygonal plane

Hi All,

This is my first post and I'm very new to Maya. Still trying to teach myself. I've run into a problem that feels like it should be simple to work through using online help. But so far I've had no luck.

I'm trying to to cut, or knock out, vector shapes originally created in Illustrator (and imported into Maya) out of a larger flat surfuce (see screenshot). I've tried extruding the illustrator shapes (the horse shoe shape and 0's) and the polygonal plane and then using Booleans to cut the shapes out of the plane but it didn't work. I also tried the Make Hole Tool. But nothing has worked so far.

Can anyone offer a solution? I'm still getting my footing with Maya so clear steps (meaning simple instructions) would be a big help. Thanks!
