yeah, once you have the object on a layer, you can click the first box to turn on/off the visibility.

The second box is to toggle between Normal, Template, and Reference modes. Template makes the object visible in outline, but not selectable. Reference makes the object visible like normal, but not selectable. Normal is normal.
