Definitely on the right track. To respond to your initial post, when patch modeling, you do not attach the nurbs surfaces together. They remain seperated and you rely on a global stitch to keep them together, which can be difficult to work with. I recomend doing as you have and convert to polys. As for your current head, a couple things: 1) The ear looks like it's too far back and protruding out too much. 2) The nose doesn't have any nostrils 3) There doesn't appear to be much of a checkbone structure. 4) lips could use a little forming, and the corners of the mouth lack the folding skin that real faces have. I highly recomend using photo references whenever possible. Keep it up!
