If you're trying to snap to a live Nubs Sphere then I believe you need to hold down "x" while you drag with the mmb. Just make sure you have the transform tool selected and not the scale or rotate. Also, it is normal for a live object to turn into wireframe.
Don't be satisfied with what you can do but rather strive to do the things you can't do!
