rendering i would say "lightning and rendering" by jeremy bern ... for modelling ... hm i had Maya Fundamentals, it is a good book ... so might be good, but as it is called fundamentals a lot of other stuff is included too...

i usualy model right away and then take the "instant maya" books for help or the build-in-help ... more than explaining what the tool actually does you don´t need anyway ...
