Edge loops and Character topology?

Can someone explain what is meant by 'edge loops' and could someone give me examples of correct character topology mesh lines preferably front/side/perspective if possible. I feel my modelling skills are progressing quite well though I notice the 'flow' lines do not look neat and correct, and I would like to correct this now before I move on to learning rigging/animation/texturing etc.
