I understand an agree with your point SlipKnot, all I intended was that it is possible to get a result similar to that which dilberts has achieved by clicking a couple of radio buttons in Mentalray without really understanding what you've actually done.

When using the software renderer, if you want to get anywhere near a half decent result, it's best to know at least the basics of three point lighting.
