Mental ray is a alternetive renderer from maya hardware, maya software, or maya vector.

Mental ray is very powerful, and it can be used to create global ilumination, or really cool effects.

The only problem with it, is that it takes a long time to render.

You can use MR for animations. As a matter of fact thats one reson to use MR instide of the maya software render. Much better motion blur.

About it being slower. Maya software would be just as slow doing the same effects. If it could.

Remember that alot of these software solutions are better left apart from each other. All in one solutions tend to be slower because the computer has to keep both running wheras if it's standalone it generally is faster. eg.(Model in Maya then send it off to be rendered, using for this example, Mental Ray)
