nonmanifold edges

What are nonmanifold edges and how to clean them, or how not to make them while modeling? If you know any tips related with converting polygons to subdivs, you can share them too. Thanks for everyone who will help.

A nonmanifold edge connects more than two faces. I usually get this if I'm not careful with merging vertices or stitching edges.
