Default Smoothing

I have created half of a complex polygon model. I duplicated it merging the vertices; but now I am left with this unwated border at the area where i have merged the two models (Like the old school ceramic piggy banks!!)

I have tried smoothing, but since the object is complex, it has left me with some unwanted results. I also tried playing with the vertices, but it didn't seem to do any good...

If anyone knows how I should approach this problem, I would truly appreciate an answer. Thank you for your time
