Some help please?

I was wondering about something that i cant seem to find in the videos that was with the software.
When i make a object like a Subdiv Torus, and i want to cut it in half first, then i want to cut some of the sides (So it looks like a motorcycle fender).

How do i do that?

I have:

* Maya Unlimited 6.0
* Maya Unlimited 7.0
