Default Problem with Paint Effects

Hi, I'm trying to make a beach with some palm trees on it. I'm using paint effects and the palm tree presets/templates that come with maya 6.5. The only problem is is that they are painting down (-Y) instead of up (+Y). How do I make them paint on the other side of my surface or in other words, go the way that I want. Thanks for some pointers!
