Default Question about selecting tools

Hi, I just got the maya personal learning edition yesterday.

This question is as basic as it gets, but I've looked through the videos and the help documentation I could find and I couldn't get an answer....

I can't seem to select the move, rotate and scale tools! I click on their icons on the left side of the screen but no handles show up on my selected object and the box doesn't show up around the tool like it does in the tutorial video.

I can select them through the modify -> transformation tools menu, but then I can't get BACK to the selection tool. I've been actually closing the program and reloading it to get the selection tool back.

I can't select the lasso, soft modification or universal manipulator either. Please help....

try a reinstall?

you've always got the keyboard shortcuts for the different items.
q = deselect
w = move
e = rotate
r = scale

find the rest in the manual/help
