Unhappy select/rotate/scale handles have retracted

Can anyone help get the handles to go back to their original size. I cannot select the centre manipulator as the xyz arrow handles have retracted up tight against it.

Posting my own reply as I found the answer from esion a couple of lines below on a similar problem. I had no idea the plus and minus arrows would resize the handles. Newbie..you bet! It had me stumped and I really did read and search! Thanks.
