Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world

Illustrator import problems

I'm trying to import an illustrator file into maya. The file is made up of compound paths in illustrator.

I'm using Illustrator CS3. I export using the Illustrator Legacy format and I choose Illustrator version 8. When I import into maya, a transform node appears in my Outliner, however there is nothing there when I focus on the object.

I've used this technique before, I don't know why it's not working. HELP!!
