How do I fill a three sided hole?

I'm sure this is very easy, but I don't know how to fill in a hole (on polygons) in a plane when it is not completely enclosed on all four sides, such as filling in the center of a C-shaped plane. I can select all the verticies and do "fill hole," but that doesn't seem to work correctly.

Also, is there an easy way to create an edge by connecting two vertex points? I can't figure out how to do this.

Thanks!

use the append tool to fill the hole - under edit polygons.

and use the split polygon tool to create an edge between 2 vertices. user added image
