Default animating a simple nurb with keyframes

i am trying to change the shape of a simple plane in animation.
this is a simple exercise on an empty scene. it goes like this:

create a nurb plane object
save this object on keyframe 1
go to keyframe 25
use the curve editing tool to deform the plane in any way
play the result as animation
notes:
- the auto keyframe toggle is on but i have also tried with off
- i have tried with saving or not saving the resulting (modified) object (shape) on different or the same keyframe.

usually changing the shape in one keyframe will affect also the shapes of the other keyframes. so there is no animation.
in out of 50 tries i have succeeded to get an animation in about seven,
but i do not know why those particular cases worked.
can anyone please help me?
