Default Shaded View Problem

I'm setting up image planes for a project on a newly installed Maya 2008. Using the Poly plane method and attaching a lambert texture with an image file in the color channel. When I go into the shaded mode with textures this is what I see. Has anyone run into this glitch? I opened up a model i did in a previous version and in textured mode everything displayed random and glitchy like this as well. Ideas?

What type of video card are you running?
What image format are you using and what resolution is your texture?

Try using another image format like tif and see if you get the same results.
