Default smoth mesh preview not working...

Hi, I am modeling a character and would like to be able to see a smoother mesh while i'm modeling. I can go to mesh> smooth then undo it but my number buttons arent allowing the function... Any suggestions?

Hey Jo, I think that the smooth mesh preview, aka 3 on the keyboard only came in with 2008.
