Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

blending textures possible?

Is it possible to blend textures using the new ramp shader in 4.5 or am I going in the wrong direction in building this shader network? I'm still experimenting through the hypershade and ran across problems when trying to blend two seperate shaders for the lips region of my alien model. Not sure where to go next. I'm still basically a newbie in the hypershade area of Maya (there are a lot of options in the hypershade I've never played around with yet). Any advice or different steps to achieve the same effect will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I don't have 4.5, but the ramp texture in 4.0 does allow you to blend textures like you're describing. You may need to play with the Ramp Type.

I took your advice and played around with ramp type. Still no luck. The color blend is easy, it is the textures that don't seem to want to plugin into the ramp. Two different type of textures. Is there a place in the Attribute Editor to add textures into the ramp shaders bump?
Another elusive shader effect, I have found troublesome is adding those crystalized sparkles into snow.

So nice to finally have a decent Maya forum to speak with other like-minded 3d artists.

You can do layered textures in Maya 4.5. There is a material called layered Shader. This is how it looks like with to layers. For Maya 4.0 I do remember reading in the AW rendering learning book on how to do this.

That's perfect! Thanks!

I searched Highend3d last week. They must be releasing new tutorials.
