Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

oh sorry i didnt mean i was giving up on maya...just gunna come back to the skull later on

Looks nice! You may want to turn up the antialiasing settings in your render globals window. Whack that setting up to production quality on your final render to smooth the edges off.

it's kinda dark in the pic too, are you using maya's default lighting? You need to add more lights to really bring the scene to life.

Also take a look at the current competition threads. there are some really nice swords in there and you can read some of the comments and crits that people have made there to give you an idea of things to add to your sword.

cheers will do..im after some tutes on shading and lighting as thats more what i need to learn at this point..
