lining up vertices

is there a command to align a selection of vertices?

You could turn on snap to grid, move them horizontally or vertically depending on how you want them alligned, then turn off snap to grid and position them where ever you want.

yep, if you have a specific point that you wan to line with, you can do the same with point snap
