Help with rendering my model

Hey! I'm still kind of a newbie to Maya and modelling in general, and I am currently building a model of a face, but I am experiencing problems when it comes to viewing it as a render..

So basically this is what I am greeted with. I had thought it was something to do with flipped polygons, I am not sure.. I would really appreciate the input!

If it helps I am using maya2011

yeah, it looks like your normals might be reversed. To check, go to to Lighting (Panel menu), and turn off two-sided Lighting. If your head turns black (I mean the model) then the normals are facing the wrong way. Just select the head, then Normals > Reverse. Hope that helps.
