There are far better people on here to help you with the technical details of this but as a viewer, the character is very boxy because of the pinched areas and sharp corners. Biggest offenders are the torso and arms.

I think we have all at some time fallen into this boxy modelling look trap where you get transfixed into the reference shot and do not look at the model in 3D, so long as your topology is OK use the sculpt tool to smooth the corners out..............dave

@Gen, There's a lot more progress now and it looks less boxy.

@Dave. Very true! I used the sculpt tool yesterday to smooth edges and he looks a lot better now. And yeah the name.. somewhere in the progress of modeling I changed from a spartan soldier to a roman empire soldier user added image Hence the helmet.

Btw I've stopped using the reference images yesterday and focussing 100% on my model.

Some more progress. Still busy with modeling (the skirt will be completely replaced). and will do final details and texturing in mudbox, but I've applied materials in maya just to show what he will somewhat look like.

Some more progress.. changed the skirt and added a tshirt underneath his armor. Gonna add some more armor plating to the skirt.
